With the Government working towards generating 15% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020, we’re committed to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels in the UK's fight against climate change. We have therefore placed the recovery of renewable energy at the heart of our business strategy.
Our aim is to recycle as much as we can, but extracting value – in the form of energy – from the waste we can’t recycle is an equally important part of our approach.
We recover valuable renewable energy from the non-hazardous waste collected through our business and municipal waste contracts.
To get energy from it, we burn the waste and use the steam that’s produced to generate electricity. This is made available at competitive prices to heat local homes and businesses. We also use wind turbines on reclaimed land to generate power for the national grid, grow carbon-neutral 'energy crops' and capture methane from landfill sites to create energy.
